'Alt' mode already does this. IMO, we should instead be encouraging new players to enable 'Alt' mode. I've seen several people, with ALT mode on, and still connect the pipes incorrectly. Agreed.
When I just started playing and bumped into something, I was sure the car was very fragile as I lost around a 1/6th of its HP already. Only later I noticed the health numbers (just 1-10hp lost) and the big bar above the toolbar. It still sometimes confuses me.

I changed the binding to right-ctrl. Was confusing the first time I started a new game and ALT didn't work, but it saves headaches on alt-tabs, alt-ds and alt-bs

Map mode supports clicking ALT to toggle the selected overlays and not. It might be that?

The game already has a key for dropping one item, "Z". Maybe it could work in inventories to transfer one item if you have nothing in your hand.
That said, currently if you hold a stack and press Z over a UI element, it drops the item on the ground behind that UI element.

AM2 is not just 50% faster than AM1, it also accepts modules. AM3 is faster and accepts more modules. Modules (and beacons) are used a lot in late game bases and by speedrunners, but aren't used very much by average players pre-rocket and therefore this benefit isn't too evident.
