Re: Friday Facts #63 The endless struggle

Well late to the topic. Thanks kovarex for the excellent write-up. Amazes me that my first and only language is English yet it's your secondary language or third? Yet still write better English. As far as the P2P thing goes. It's very critical for FPS or any high demand game where syncing is small i...

Re: Friday Facts #44 - Decision making

What is a tank? To us modern humans. What is it's purpose? Well soldiers on the front lines can face numerous problems. They can simply be outnumbered. Not to mention losing soldiers when the enemy has a tactical advantage. Maybe they have heavy fortification, heavy machine weaponary that pins the s...

Re: [0.10.3] Constant micro-freezes/frame drops

Yes obviously you are more tech savvy than I was aware. Admittedly I've never owned an AMD processor. So that processor / architecture might handle parking and unparking better. My intel i7-920 games that utilize the hyper threading suffer a pretty noticeable micro-stutter. In some games it will hav...

Re: Multithreading question

Hehe, you need to be somehow frustrated to write more than 1 screen about game development with unity. :) ;) Well maybe not frustrated. Okay slightly frustrated with the idea that any one can program complex pieces of software. They are capable because in recent years it has become more accessible ...

Re: [0.10.3] Constant micro-freezes/frame drops

Hello, I've had this for a while (at least since 0.10.1, hadn't played in a while before that). The game has micro-freezes for me every ~3 seconds or so (for maybe a few hundred ms). This can be a completely new game (default everything) without any mods, or one of my active games where I'm mostly ...

Re: Multithreading question

Factorio is pretty darn well efficient in my opnion for an indie game. I would agree. The devs on the team are very smart. It's also the added benefit of not using an existing engine. Well Allegro, what they use, is really more of game programming library. Kind of like SDL but with a bit more game ...

Re: Version 0.10.3

I used the automatic in-game updater. When it finished updating the game crashed. I immediately loaded back up the game and it didn't seem to hurt anything. Maybe... 1) The new Data Downloaded, 2) It tried to execute code based on that new data. 3) But that new data wasn't loaded therefore the game ...

Re: Forum guidelines needed

I hate forums that impose rules on what you should say and not say. What should be posted and not posted. I feel most of it is common sense. This is the factorio forums. For things to be discussed about factorio. Granted communities will spawn and will want to talk about different things from time t...

Re: Version 0.10.0

Got rid of iostreams? Mh, would be interesting to see why that did take so much time. I hope you didn't use endl for every new line, that would explain the long saving time. ^^ Iostreams have some ridiculous performance issues. I did some performance testing long ago and ran into things like cin be...

Re: Friday Facts #37

First thing I tried was replaying my 0.9.8 saves. Then realized it only works for v0.10 game saves. Which makes sense if there was nothing recorded in 0.9.8 saves then their is nothing to replay :P. I like this update nothing major gameplay wise. Just a lot of polish. :D Loving the new graphics. The...

Re: Friday Facts #35 The lighthouse keeper

I hate to be that guy. But when is the 0.10 experimental version going to be available? It was at first expected mid of may then it's end of may expected. Says on the friday facts you're working on it. Now that I think about it I would hate to be a developer. "Ugh excuse me but when are you go...

Do you have a deathwish? Yes I do.

In a decision to make the game harder instead of leaving the map generator options on default. I changed four of the settings: Enemy Bases -> Frequency to Very High Enemy Bases -> Size to Very Big Enemy Bases -> Richness to Very Good Starting Area -> Size to Small Upon loading the map I looked at th...

Re: 3D vs 2D which is better for Factorio?

The main issue is the performance. If everything was 3d, we would have 20 000+ 3d objects on screen instead of 20 000 sprites, i doubt it is possible to have it these days. The other way around would be to allow the zoomout levels drastically, but I personally hate it. Like I've said I don't know m...

Re: Looking for laptop with reasonable keyboard

Having to use external keyboard AND external with the laptop would be pretty annyoing. This is was I was able to find, obviously I'm not the only one, but there are not many people taking this seriously: http://superuser.com/questions/477365/are-there-any-custom-keyboard-available-for-laptops Espec...

Re: Looking for laptop with reasonable keyboard

So I would like to buy a new laptop, so I can work outside, in train etc., so I can be more mobile. The thing is, that I'm used to my Desktop pc with standard keyboard, and I hate the typical laptop keyboard layouts. What I'm looking for is some high quality laptop with high performance (Compile ti...

3D vs 2D which is better for Factorio?

Being someone who likes to learn more about game development. As I would like to start trying to make my own (small and simple) game for fun. (Who doesn't?). I've coded a few mods for games in C/C++ and did a bit of modding with LUA a few years ago. Anyways. I was curious after scanning through all ...

Scaling the UI? And other option questions.

Hello I got this game a couple of days ago and so far it's pretty fun for an alpha. However I've come across something that I see in a lot of other games. Scaling of the UI. I have a 2560x1600 30" monitor. In a few games they often leave out people on high resolutions. In those cases it's unpla...
