I think it's fine. The player can already turn off the biters completely if they want to focus solely on the building part. This just lets them fight the biters in a different way.

You never have to sit and wait for the next research if you are making tons of research vials for a lot of labs, and you should always have things to be doing, like expanding, automating more things, killing bitters, using what your last research unlocked... In general, I feel like there needs to be more motivation for the player to seek out resources from beyond the base, maybe shift the last tech on free mode by one magnitude, or introduce more technologies in between. Only some mods are affected. Any that modify the gui are currently out of commission pending a fix, but those that don't add any fancy effects will not be affected like the OWL mod, or any other mod that just adds recipes or graphics of the same type as the rest of the mod.

Haven't built rails in this version yet. But how does one defend against biters that attack rails that transverse the middle of no-where without setting up an extensive amount of defense?

Optimization is usually one of the last steps in development afaik. No use doing optimization on something that might not last to the final version.

I'd prefer keeping the nests easily destructible. Biters seem like the kind that would rather drown the player in a tide of chitin than evolve a sophisticated answer. I can't seem to get the crude barrel emptying procedure to work in the chemical plant, anyone else getting this?

Edit: Nevermind, first playthrough with oil, and I didn't notice that the crude oil and barrel were not part of this mod :P.
