I would like to see continents in Factorio, It seems like an appropriate next-level obstacle with its own solutions. These continents would be absolutely massive and form the necessity to build boats to explore and conquer new land from the bitters and spitters. It wouldn't make trains or belt obsol...

each string of poles has 2*number of items channels for data transfer and each channel can hold (presumably) a 32 bit word

Looks neat, just a small tip for you, upgrade all those assemblers to the blue ones (or yellow even ) because they cause less pollution and have better power/product ratio.

another problem, When does this horizontal rocket diappear if its going vertically up your screen?
Can you place your character 100 meters away and still see the rocket fly by? Or does it "Just disappear" after 80 meters?

I think the game handles the locomotives fine when it comes to fuel extraction using inserters, If you are having problems with inserters stealing fuel from the locomotive use smart inserters with filters to prevent such a problem. You can't go change the entire game around it.
