Oh well, it depends really. I always build solid boxes and fortified stations. The idea of empty, spaced out defense line which is only working because of the limited AI of the attacker is uncomfortable for me.

Dude, zou have either something wrong with zour setup, or an extremelz large map. It|s impossible to get such performance with factorio on that CPU unless you have a month of gameplaz in one savefile. Well, the word "large" is rather subjective, so i'll just link you my map lol its a olde...

I can also imagine that laser "projectiles" could miss fast targets - so at some point, massing laser is not efficient anymore, but a combo of laser + gun deals with all thinkable biter attack force composition - laser turrets for the long-ranged spitters and the bigger, slower biters, and...

I think that issue is as old as there are laser turrets existing. IMHO, that IS and issue, since since the laser turrets were added, I just Ignore biters attacks and deal with them manually while I rush for lasers.
