Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
Do you really think you could go to jail or be charged with stealing something you legally own? There is no country on earth with laws against this. Yes. There have been cases of people downloading music and getting caught, and trying to defend themselves by saying they already owned the CD. It did...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
So if I understand you correctly, you do not consider it DRM because my current version of the game I have installed is not hindered in any way from running and does not require a login or other forms of DRM to operate? Correct. I could bypass the whole mess by using the pirates for updates instead...

Re: When will there be an OSX Mavericks update? Please make
I'm using OSX Mavericks and the game works fine. How is it unplayable? Are the graphics garbled, i.e. maybe you need to toggle the low quality graphics on?

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
Seeing as how we all bought the FINISHED game, and DID NOT just pay for whatever alpha version was availible, i think i AM entitled to updates and I DO NOT consider updates to be some kind of "bonus". After the game is released I will agree with your point, but until we get out of alpha, ...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
The updater mechanism doesn't imply ANYTHING about how Factorio intends to implement multiplayer. There is simply no connection whatsoever. Updating the game and multiplayer are two completely different things. It restricts the action of updating the game, unless you comply with the login. Nope. It ...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
In this context, the context of DRM and Video Games, Rights are the unhindered ability to do something. If you are hindered (forced to log in) then that is considered DRM. Oh boy. You just defined all forms of commerce to be DRM. Having to pay for a product before playing it is hindering your abili...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
I consider it DRM because they are "managing" your "rights" to update your "digital" product. There's no universal "right to update". You bought a license to the game which came with a promise of access to all the future patches. This isn't an implicit right ...

Re: Off-Topic discussions about Pro and Contra DRM plus meta
Apparently, discussion of pirating is already regulated. According to another thread I had been reading recently, repeated posting of links to torrents is a bannable offense on this forum. Are you perhaps referring to the guy who was threatening to DDOS the servers down unless he was allowed to pos...

Re: Pirating as a 'demo'. Your opinions?
Demos don't exist in a vacuum nowadays. Virtually any game has a LP on youtube out there. I myself was attracted to Factorio after watching a youtube LP. Sure, maybe the demo isn't enough, but surely hours upon hours of youtube LPs can give a potential buyer a good impression of a game without havi...

Re: So i have an issue with the alien things
If you still have enough resources to make 50 rounds of armor piecing bullets, that and a submachine gun will be enough to wipe that enemy base (it's just one spawner?) real easy. Don't try using the normal ammo, use armor piecing only. Well, shotgun works wonders too once you manage to get the bite...

I think that was before the pollution system was implemented. I recall biters would randomly attack steam engines, labs and radars.sciencemile wrote:I think the tutorial from the Demo said that Biters really hate Radars, but that might have been just flavor text.

Right now, I'm writing my own trigonometric functions, so yes I'm kind of deep in kind of nonsense :) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/23876260/source-code-for-trigonometric-functions-calculations You should never have to write your own trigonometry functions :D Googling about it a little finds t...

Re: Friday Facts #35 The lighthouse keeper
Replay is quite the can of worms. If you want the old replay files to keep working in new versions of the game, you might have to modularize the entire game engine so that the replay code loads an older version of world generator/simulator to run the replay. This brings in super nasty consequences: ...

Re: Hardmode strategies
Pollution control. Minimum amount of mining, and place a furnace right next to electric miner, so once the furnace is full of ore the miner only works at 50% efficiency (and generates only 50% pollution). Place your only steam generator inside a forest so that it eats the pollution. Try to make it s...

I didn't forget, I had it specifically in mind. If [any of] the devs got in trouble for something, Factorio could be in jeopardy. Nonsense. Copyright infringement requires the rights holder to sue. Are they going to sue a high profile customer who actually paid for their game? What would they gain?...

Re: Train Signals making me go crazy
Signals split the track into segments. Trains will wait at block signal if there's another train in the next segment. Because there's no block signal before the station up there, the block signal at the junction sees the station in the next segment and will block as long as there's train there. Also...

Re: Download Problems
Firefox resume is annoying if the connection dies and it thinks it was finished. You have to take a copy of the unfinished download, start the download again, pause, copy the large unfinished file over the newly started download, then unpause... not fun at all. Anyway, I haven't tried these but ther...
