I don't see why not. You're in a gigantic wasteland where you don't have to think about civilian casualties, and there's a giant menace actively trying to kill you.

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Nuclear waste is simply contaminated fuel (usually solid, because you can just remove impurities from liquid). It's not really useful for anything in itself. It's simply that you can use up "the rest" of it in a MSR. Once you have access to MSR technology there is no reason whatsoever to c...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Good luck trying to weaponize thorium :D Trying to fission it to U235 would be pretty stupid thing to do as reaction byproducts are so radioactive that anyone nearby would boil instantly lol, or gamma radiation would kill him minutes later. Anyway few videos advocating Thorium for energy generation...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Well there is absolutely no reason to use uranium for nuclear ENERGY unless you want to build nuclear WEAPONS, clean and efficient and more plentiful fuel for that is thorium, containment vessel operates under 1 atmosphere pressure unlike "standard" uranium fueled reactors which go 100-30...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Let's make nuclear energy realistic. Mining = LOT of pollution (because of huge amount of waste in mining this stuff - yellow cake) Refining = probably meh Making Power = probably next to nothing Problem is we don't have mechanics for storing used fuel rods and you could just shoot wooden chest and...

Looking for someone to MP with

Just looking for someone to play some multiplayer with. I might also mention that I'm looking for someone in a similar timezone (I'm in GMT+1, Europe). If you're 18+ that's also preferable.

I'm not really playing with any mods at the moment, but I might later on. I can also set up server if needed.

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Solar power should still be nerfed as well, though. I know a lot of people would be unhappy with that, but solar power is so unbalanced with the rest of the game it feels like cheating. I feel like it's only as powerful as it is because there is currently no other second-tier power source. I don't ...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

The answer is clean. But it serves no mechanical purpose unless solar energy is nerfed. I'd say it does. 1) Much more compact, so you can produce a LOT more energy compared to real estate needed. 2) Some reactors could produce byproducts for weaponry 3) If actual survival ever becomes a thing, you ...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Well, a game using real things should accurately represent reality, which is why reality is worth discussing. Of course you can gamify concepts so they're more entertaining, but knowing how things work in real life is the first step to implementing them in a game. Here's a nice summarium of LFTR: ht...

Re: Friday Facts #101 - The players are real people

Thanx for nothing @slpwnd , there is still a friday facts update with the word slavery in big letters and a paragraph that belittles the suffering that modern slaves and my ancestors had to endure at the hands of heartless monsters eho insisted there was nothing wrong with their words or actions. I...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Water power is much more efficient than wind if you generate it in the appropriate terrain (sloping rivers, etc.), In a sufficiently large body of water, you could use Tidal Power . That could somewhat fit Factorio too, I suppose. I actually don't know that much about tidal power, but it looks like...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

@Safan Steam engines could be replaced by more modern turbines to more or less completely eliminate pollution from them (the pollution should come from the boilers burning coal. If you could heat water without using dirty fuel, like.. nuclear power, then together with modern turbines you should prod...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

All these posts saying nuclear energy is clean. Its only clean because we bottle up the waste and send it elsewhere. For a game where your car runs on coal I imagine containing the waste would either not work well or just be dumped somewhere. Not true. I mean, yeah you get some waste, but newer tec...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

If you make nuclear energy dirty or extremely harmfui I'd just chalk it up to either ignorance or having an agenda (i.e. propaganda). Nuclear reactors have traditionally had 3 problems. 1) Volatile due to high-pressurized tanks of water 2) production of nuclear waste piling up 3) fail-safes requiri...

Re: Nuclear power in Factorio - clean or dirty?

Nuclear energy is extremely clean. In the case of older technology (specifically solid fuel) it produces nuclear waste, but no pollution. In the case of newer technology (liquid fuel) it produces next to 0 waste (about 160 times more fuel efficiency than traditional solid fuel reactors iirc), and yo...
