[Unsolved] Couldn't establish network communication.

me and a friend from Denmark are trying to play Factorio together, and we couldn't connect
we both set up port forwarding on our routers, disabled windows firewall to try out if that was it
he tried hosting, I tried hosting, we tried starting a fresh game, going to menu and then connecting

I'm running windows 7 64-bit, he's running windows 10 64-bit and couldn't find the error log
I can connect to https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... 53&t=13604
he can't connect to that one either

I haven't been able to connect to any servers. My friend can connect, but has desync problems.

We haven't tried evolve yet.

FPS as in Frames Per Second? My game runs locked on 56 FPS it would seem.

I have a 100/100 mbit stable fiber connection.

I live in the Netherlands and have according to the ISP fiber 120Mbp/s download and about 10Mbp/s upload currently iirc, steam top dl speed is about 11.8 MB/s

I'm not sure but it looks like your port forwarding/firewalling isn't working correctly :|
While you are able to connect to the other peer, it looks like the reply message confirming the connection does not reach your computer.

this is a bit more outdated version then the current router software, but the basics are the same:

the checkbox for "Enable Port Forwarding" is checked on the Port Forwarding tab

that's the port forwarding on my router, a Sitecom 300N, done exactly according to instructions, and the same way I did it for other ports for other games that did work, set up for both TCP and UDP because that's the default selection
I tried disabling AVG, we both tried disabling the windows firewall to see if we had to add Factorio as an exception there too, and I just repeated all of the above steps once more
I just added the port to the windows firewall as well just in case

I then checked with http://www.canyouseeme.org/
and it says it can't see me
but that site also says it can't see my torrent port, which according to the torrent program is functioning

http://ping.eu/port-chk/ confirms that 34197 is closed

Both of those tools make no mention if they check udp or tcp specifically, if you really want to make sure the ports are open correctly on both ends I'd suggest a command line tool like netcat to check:

Notice the "Connected to" if you see this you can successfully connect to the udp port (factorio has to be running and you obviously need to enter your friend's ip instead of the one I posted)
if you are on windows you could install something like MobaXTerm to get access to netcat + a load of other useful linux command line tools ;)

Also, I noticed 192.168.*

we are not on the same network, that is a copy/paste from my router's port forwarding, which requires a local address to set it up rather then my global IP
he lives in Denmark, I live in the Netherlands

I poked around on the IRC channel, and someone mentioned that we both have to have all ports fully cleared everywhere to work due to it being a p2p connection, not a server based connection with me automatically hosting when I host a Factorio game
so I'll have to ask Groundhog to recheck but I'm not sure if he's in the mood for that

Looks correct, however, as my brother experienced - not all consumer routers handle port forwarding correctly simply because the gui seems to indicate it.
In his case the router firmware had to be set to udp and tcp both for the port forward to function.

Anecdotal rambling aside, please use a low level tool (such as netcat suggested earlier) to verify that your ports are correctly forwarded. (verify this from both your computers)

Funnily enough I too am from the Netherlands and had this exact problem when trying to connect to my friend who lives in Denmark =P

It was fixed by simple portforwarding, though.

Reading through the posts in this thread you forwarded the ports to 192.168.1.52.
If by now you still can't play with your friend, you could try to (if you hadn't already) set a static IP to 192.168.1.52.
Depending on your router, it sometimes tends to change your internal IP when you haven't connected in a few days.

I have a static LAN IP, and by the looks of it so does Groundhog considering his port forwarding rules are both set to .52
It's one of the basic requirements for port-forwarding to work to my understanding

Something about having learned to be careful with "random programs posted on random forums" I'm guessing

I never had a use for software like that, as I usually can get things to work, or conclude that it's not on my end with testing my connection to other people then just the person I'm trying to play with
which we did here as well, I could connect to other random servers from this forum, he could not
and in my experience people are also quickly put off when asked "yeah if you want to play this game with me you need Teamspeak/Vent/Raidcall/Software X"
as people seem to then play together shortly, and then stop, making the whole mountain of effort of installing, learning and using new software too much of a hassle for most

I checked with online Tools while connected to a random US server, and they state the ports are closed
