Everything can be automated... except combat

I enjoy automating everything, and it seems like everything can be automated, except combat. Even something like long range artillery and some sort of patrol robot that kills anything nearby would be great. Bonus points if you can order the bots around somehow.

It just seems like a glaring problem in the game, especially late game when it just becomes a slog to take out the aliens.

The problem with mods is they disable achievements...

But anyways, I've taken to just turning the biter base settings on map gen way, way down. I still get thousands of artifacts to do what I want with... but it does away with the 'can't spit without hitting 50 biter bases and 50 more sending reinforcements' slog...
